Cornucopia – Meaning, History, Tips and Suggestions

A cornucopia, pronounced korn-yoo-KO-pee-uh, is a horn-shaped container. It is a time-honored symbol, long associated with Thanksgiving, that symbolizes abundance. It is also known as the “horn of plenty” and is usually filled with an assortment of the Earth’s harvest.

Although it is usually a symbol of Thanksgiving, it was symbolic well before this holiday existed. The word ‘cornucopia’ actually dates back to the 5th century BC. It derives from two Latin words: “cornu,” meaning horn (as in the name of that one-horned creature, the “unicorn”) and “copia,” meaning plenty.  Thus, “cornucopia” literally means horn of plenty, and the names are used interchangeably.

The cornucopia was usually depicted as a curved goat’s horn, filled to overflowing with fruit and grain and nuts, but could actually have been filled with whatever the owner wished.

Today, the cornucopia often finds its way to the Thanksgiving table as a centerpiece. It is made like a basket and filled to overflowing with fresh flowers and fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Many people have such a basket that they bring annually to their local flower shop to be filled anew with a harvest of seasonal products.

Most florists carry cornucopias and keep them on hand during the Thanksgiving season.  A horn of plenty centerpiece looks great on a Thanksgiving table or side buffet table arranged with flowers, dried wheat, or cattails, too.  Florists can use their design skills to come up with all different types of cornucopia arrangements using lotus pods, nuts, and dried fruit.  Gourds or miniature pumpkins can be used as well.

A cornucopia is a perfect symbol of gratitude for all that we have – and all that we wish to share.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Gift Ideas for Your Boyfriend or Husband – Buying for Those Hard to Buy For

For the average person, we buy 3 gifts a year – birthday, Christmas and anniversary. For many, this is an easy task as we are spoile with ideas and choices. However, for the person who seems to have everything this can be a stressful experience when it comes to finding a great birthday, Christmas or anniversary present. So how do you go about buying for those hard to buy for?

Buying gifts for that “person who has everything” tend to fall into 2 categories. The first are things that he may want and the second are things that he needs. A good starting point to finding the right gift is to match it to his personality, interests and needs.

If your boyfriend or husband is into gadgets or electronics, the person who has everything is most likely to have self-indulged in the latest LCD TV, iPod or stereo. Here, you will have to look for gifts that are generally given rather than something you would purchase yourself. One gift that I like is the digital photo frame or digital key chain.

If he is artistic or creative, personalized art is thoughtful and tasteful. Personalized art is something that is often given as a surprise gift for anniversaries or special occasions. Dig out a cool picture of the two of you and turn it into a fun piece of art. Are you always the one that is wined and dine? Why not turn the table around and be the one to take him out for a romantic dinner and give him a bouquet of flowers to show your everlasting love. At least you will be remembered for the first girl to have bought him flowers!

If he loves to joke around and appreciates fun and novelty items, then giving him a silly office toy is a good way to relieve stress and lighten up his day. For the person who likes a bit of adventure, an experience gift such as sky diving, hot air balloon or formula car racing is a gift guaranteed to be remembered for many years to come.

The second category of gifts that he has and will always need is easier to buy but it requires some thought.

If your boyfriend or husband is a sports fanatic, he is most likely to have all the running gear, golf accessories or sports wear. Do some research and keep yourself updated with the latest sports gear and be ready to replace them when his old ones pass their sell by date. For example, my husband is a runner and typically running shoes last about 6 months so for his birthday I replaced his old running shoes with a new pair. This is a thoughtful gift.

Similarly, if he has certain hobbies or interests whether it is video games or reading, you can always buy him accessories related to his hobby but be sure to check that he does not already have it. Most likely, he will but if you are able to get ahead of the game by buying him something he does not have yet, it’s a good way to his heart. Another great gift that he has and always need is to put together a Gift Basket or if it is Christmas a Stocking Stuffer of little useful things. This could be personal care items, favorite snacks or CDs.

With some thought and understanding your partner’s needs you will be able to find that perfect Christmas, birthday or anniversary gift that is out of the ordinary for that person who seems to have everything.

Bunco Party Theme Ideas

Bunco is a great game that is rapidly taking over in our living rooms. It’s not your grandmother’s canasta game!

Bunco allows for regular get-togethers with family, friends, and neighbors as you can meet on a monthly basis, while rotating hosts. It’s fast paced and gets you mixing with all players (usually 12) as you rotate from table to table.

Couples can play together in the group, or increasingly popular is a monthly girls night out. For the girls night out, set up the TV show Desperate Housewives as you play!

Decorations

*Hanging fuzzy dice and lots of black and red balloons.

*Line the area with casino themed posters and art

*Use poster board to create large playing cards and dice

*Playing card piñatas

*Hang large playing cards suit cutouts on the walls.

Invitations

Purchase decks of cards and place an invitation inside. The decks can be mailed or hand-delivered to each recipient.

You can also create your own theme with Bunco related items such as dice and playing cards.

Food/Drink

*Have different stations throughout the room with finger foods and snacks.

*The best drinks include popular mixed drinks and beer.

*Be sure to have soda on hand for the non-alcoholic set as well as water for all.

Music

Play the host’ favorite tunes or from his/her era (70s, 80’s, 90’s, etc.). For a girl’s night out, play “chick flick” movies in the background.

Have a great Bunco party!

Lunchables Jr Ham Sparks & Burns (edited)

UPDATE MAY 8, 2008: Kraft responded that the reason the ham sparks is because the pieces were cut up and touching. (???) They said this often happens with items such as ham, hotdogs, etc. I did do another test, with everything carefully spread out, and it did not spark. Weird. I also cook hotdogs and such (cut up first) and they never spark… so the explanation is only partially comforting to me. Kraft also sent a HUGE gift basket. In the interest of fairness, I am going to assume that the plethora of gifts was due to me contacting several higher-ups at the company. However, it was so crammed full of stuff, we are jokingly calling it the “Please don’t sue us Gift Basket”. ******* April 23, 2008. This is the edited version — with text commentary — of the ham in Lunchables Jr sparking and burning in the microwave. A full-length, uncut version is also on my channel — complete with a FULL DESCRIPTION in this space. All edits are noted with a transition. I await a response from Kraft Foods. UPDATE: I’ve had a few people suggest to me the cause could be “mineral,” fat, or water content. To those suggestions I say… WHAH??? Fat content: I reheat chicken, pork, ham and other things with fat on them all the time. No sparks. I also cook BACON in the microwave. (Plate, paper towels, bacon — about 1 minute per piece on plate.) No sparks. Water content: Please. How many things do I cook with a high water content? Too many to count. Mineral conent: Common. What mineral could

Dieting? 50 Foods Under 100 Calories

The key to a healthy diet is moderation. So many portion sizes are out of control and therefore many of us find it hard to eat healthy snacks. Something as simple as replace condiments with low fat, or fat free can make a huge impact in the amount of calories that we are consuming daily. Read the labels, track how many calories are being consumed before eating consciously, most likely, you will be shocked at the difference!

Snacking can be a dieter’s worst nightmare and although snack companies are making it easier by creating smaller portion sized snacks in individual packaging – sometimes the dieter would like a little something different. Here are some ideas for fifty snack size friendly ideas, all fewer than 100 calories.

1. 1/2 cup of applesauce

2. 1 cup of broccoli

3. 2 medium cucumbers

4. Jello 5 Calorie Packages

5. 10 Jumbo black olives

6. 2 cups. fresh raspberries

7. 8 oz. lemonade

8. 1 head of romaine lettuce

9. 4 cups of popcorn

10. 2 cups of butter flavored popcorn

11. 8 large shrimp

12. 2 c. puffed rice cereal

13. 6 tortilla chips

14. 1 cup cheese popcorn

15. 2 small bananas

16. 1 cup cantaloupe

17. 17 grapes

18. 1.5 kiwis

19. 1 cup of. fresh pineapple

20. 4 tomatoes

21. 1 baked potato with fat free sour cream

22. 1 grapefruit with sweetener

23. 1/2 cup of caramel popcorn

24. 6 animal crackers

25. 1/2 of an English muffin

26. 1/4 cup of granola

27. 1 plain small sized bagel

28. 1 oz. of cream cheese

29. one slice of white or whole wheat bread

30. 2 graham crackers

31. 4 large pretzels

45. 30 goldfish crackers

46. 1 oz. of bacon

47. 4 Hershey’s kisses

48. 2 small plums

49. one medium orange

50. 3 small peaches

Just because a snack falls under the one hundred calorie line doesn’t mean that it has to have little or no taste. Many of these snacks can be added together, for example – a serving of fresh fruit salad will contain less than one hundred calories. The key to dieting with success is to be creative, this way – the dieter will not get bored with the routine and seek something different or full fat.

Consider preparing these snacks ahead of time and store them in the cupboard, or in the refrigerator in the healthy portion sizes. This will encourage healthy eating as we become accustomed to smaller, healthy portions, and it becomes a part of our newly healthy lifestyle.

You see, there are options for low calorie foods. Some of these are surprising, the head of lettuce perhaps – combined with fat free caeser salad dressing and low fat croutons a small, low fat caeser salad is a breeze to make!
